Staff Notice Board W27/24

Support

  • In a club environment like ours it is very important to support and lift each other up.
  • I like a fun relaxed atmosphere where we have a laugh and take the piss, but that need to be a balanced, with respect, encouragement and support for each other and our members, all members not just the “cool” ones.
  • Support takes many different forms,
    • verbal encouragement,
    • being a good partner – helping your partner when rolling,
    • turning up – training when they have a comp coming up or just being at a comp or fight to cheer them on,
    • even – “That (pass, sweep, sub) was slick” when you see someone do something in a roll.

Coaching

  • Coaching is a privilege, people trust us when they come to SASSOM to learn, so it is important we take on this challenge with integrity every time our members turn up to train.
  • We are all learning to be better at teaching including myself, some of us have been at for a while now, others are just starting, we all make mistakes, and to some point we need to make these mistakes to get better.
  • So if someone is teaching please be careful about how, when and where you give advise, correct or add something to what they are teaching. Please do not correct someone in front of other members.
  • There is more than one way to do many things in BJJ/Martial Arts and when you have been at it for 20+ years you will see that even the “experts” change how they do and teach a technique. Which makes this complex sport/Martial Arts even more difficult to learn and teach.
  • Often people that have a different approaches to the same technique are correct in the way they do it for the reasons they do it that way. So if you have a different view to someone else that is ok, for both of you. Try to understand their reasons and you may learn a new “trick” or two.
  • Also remember there are layers to techniques, a coach may be teaching a technique a certain way because of who they have in their class, and a simple version of a technique may be more appropriate at that time.
  • if you have something to add, talk to the instructor when they are not address the whole class, they can then decide wether to add your advise into their class or not.
