Lesson (30min)

  • Hook Sweep – Standard Variation
    1. Start in bottom half guard, with uke applying a crossface and underhook
    2. Use an elbow escape to get to a butterfly hook on the crossface side
    3. Use both of your elbows to pinch uke’s arms to your chest
      • Do not release your grip until the sweep is complete, uke’s upper body must remain close to your chest for the sweep to work
    4. Hip out to face the side of uke’s trapped underhook
    5. Use butterfly hook to lift uke up and sweep them to the side of their trapped underhook
      • Pull your knees to your chest to lift uke; do not try to sweep them sideways at the level of your hips
  • Hook Sweep – Ankle Block
    1. Continue from half guard hook sweep, uke stands up to their feet to widen their base
    2. Use your foot to block the uke’s ankle
      • Use the sole of your foot to block, do not kick at uke’s leg
    3. Finish the hook sweep
  • Hook Sweep – Shoulder Crunch
    1. Start in bottom half guard, with uke applying a crossface and underhook
    2. Trap uke’s crossfacing arm with a “shoulder crunch” grip
      • Your forearm should be under uke’s chin, letting you push their head to the side while their elbow remains trapped against your chest
    3. Insert a butterfly hook on the side opposite to uke’s trapped arm
    4. Hip out to face the side of your shoulder crunch grip
    5. Lift uke as before and finish the hook sweep to the side of your shoulder crunch grip
  • Hook Sweep – Double Direction
    1. Start in bottom half guard, with uke applying a crossface and underhook
    2. Attempt a standard half-butterfly hook sweep (sweep to the underhook side)
    3. Uke comes up onto their feet to widen their base and also evades the ankle block
      • Evade by stepping over the ankle block foot
    4. Insert a second butterfly hook and switch to a shoulder crunch grip
    5. Change directions and finish with a shoulder crunch hook sweep (sweep to the crossface side)
      • Ensure you switch your hips to face the direction of your sweep
