Warm Up (10min)

Partner Drills

  • Lasso Guard Control

Lesson (30min)

Lasso Guard Defence

  1. Start in lasso guard top
  2. Take an inside grip on uke’s secondary leg
  3. Pull your elbow back from uke’s lasso leg swim your hand to the outside
    • Ensure your hand stays outside or at least behind uke’s hamstrings to negate their lasso
  4. Move to uke’s side (similar to a toreando pass) and level change down to get to a pin
  5. Extend your arm away from uke’s lasso to break the connection and secure the guard pass

Lasso & Spider Defence – Smash Pass

  1. Start in lasso-spider guard top
  2. Grip uke’s gi pants on the spider side and their lapel on the lasso side
  3. Step back and away from uke’s hips
  4. Put uke on their side and use your shin to break their spider hook, getting to headquarters position
  5. Smash uke’s knees together and pass to a side pin
    • If uke doesn’t flare their lasso outwards, you will be able to do this even though your arm is trapped (similar to passing the knee-shield with a weave pass)

Lasso & Spider Defence – Knee Cut

  1. Continue from headquarters position (uke using a lasso on the near side)
  2. Uke flares their lasso outwards to stop the smash pass
  3. Come up to your feet and pass their lasso foot in front of your chest
    • Do not let go of your grips; keep their legs controlled and uke tilted sideways
  4. Walk behind uke’s near side and use your elbow to get inside position on their lasso leg
  5. Re-establish headquarters position and go into knee cut passing (or any other HQ passing system)

Spider Guard Defence

  1. Start in double-spider guard top
  2. Grip both of uke’s gi pants
  3. Step away from uke’s hips
    • Ideally, get uke’s back off the mat, so they are in a seated position
  4. Close your elbows above uke’s legs
    • Uke’s feet should pop off from your biceps and point downwards
  5. Follow up your defence by executing a toreando pass
