Lesson (30min)
Scissor Sweep
- Start in spider guard bottom, with one foot on uke’s bicep and the other on their hip (uke kneeling)
- Fall to the side onto your elbow and turn uke’s shoulders sideways
- Bring your spider hook as high as possible over uke’s head
- Drop your foot from uke’s hip to the outside of their knee
- Use the opposing forces of your legs to sweep uke onto their back
- Make sure the direction of your sweep is forwards, not sideways
- Use your foot on uke’s bicep to keep them on the ground as you come up to top position
Tomoe-Nage – Standing Opponent
- Start in spider guard bottom, with one foot on uke’s bicep and the other on their hip (uke standing)
- Take a lapel grip on the side opposite to your spider hook
- Use your spider hook and lapel to pull uke’s upper body above your head
- Extend your legs to tilt uke forwards and throw them overhead onto the mat
- Don’t extend your legs too early; ensure they are floating over your head first
- Follow uke’s falling direction with your own body and finish in mount with two sleeve grips
Tomoe-Nage – Kneeling Opponent
- Start in spider guard bottom, with one foot on uke’s bicep and the other on their hip (uke kneeling)
- Take a lapel grip on the side opposite to your spider hook
- Use your spider hook, lapel and a rocking motion to pull uke’s upper body above your head with momentum
- Uke will likely stand up when you do this; this isn’t a problem as long as they end up over your head
- Extend your legs to tilt uke forwards and throw them overhead onto the mat
- Don’t extend your legs too early; ensure they are floating over your head first
- Follow uke’s falling direction with your own body and finish in mount with two sleeve grips
Hook Sweep
- Start in spider guard bottom, with one foot on uke’s bicep and the other on their hip (uke standing)
- Take your foot off the hip and place a butterfly hook behind uke’s upper hamstrings
- Use your spider hook and butterfly hook to pull uke’s upper body above your head
- Follow uke’s falling direction with your own body and finish in mount with two sleeve grips
