Lesson (30min)
Rear Lapel Strangle – Finishing Mechanics
- Start in back control with a seatbelt grip
- Place the thumb of your strangle hand under uke’s chin
- Use your control hand to pass uke’s lapel to your strangle hand
- Switch your control hand to grip and pull down on uke’s other lapel
- The lapel should be pulled down uke’s body to take the slack out
- Pull uke’s collar across their neck with your strangle hand to finish the strangle
- The lapel should be pulled such that your elbow goes behind uke’s shoulder, so they cannot pull on your sleeve and interfere with the submission
Rear Lapel Strangle – Grip Details
- Start in back control with a seatbelt grip
- Set the strangle hand on uke’s lapel
- Use your control hand to maintain tension on uke’s lapel while your strangle hand “bites” upwards to climb up high on the collar
- Set the control hand on uke’s other lapel
- Go into the strangle as before
- While applying the submission, release your strangle hand’s pinky from uke’s lapel; this will help ensure that your wrist does not bend
Bow & Arrow Strangle – Control Side
- Continue from back control, with both hands set on uke’s lapels
- Shift your body to the control side and throw your hook across uke’s body
- Continue falling to the control side and hip out towards their upper body
- You should end up in a position similar to an armbar, with your hips behind uke’s shoulders
- Place your top leg over uke’s shoulder
- Go into the strangle with the assistance of your legs and bodyweight
- Your legs should push in the opposite direction to the pull of your arms
Bow & Arrow Strangle – Strangle Side
- Continue from back control, with both hands set on uke’s lapels
- Uke falls to the strangle side, pinning your leg under their body
- Hook your top leg behind uke’s knee to elevate their body and free your pinned leg
- Come up to a seated position and throw your hook across uke’s body
- Note that this position is the same as technical/seated mount, which is another position to enter into the submission from
- Place your other leg over uke’s shoulder and go into the strangle as before
- You may have to lift uke’s shoulder off the mat to make it easier for your leg to come around
