Staff Notice Board W44/22

Price Increase

  • I have increased the weekly Direct Debit from $42.00 – $45.00 per week for Adult Martial Arts. This is the first price increase in about 5-years, and really needs to be increased again soon (maybe January) to keep up with inflation. At this point I have only increased the coast for new members, not existing members. $45.00 is still very competitive to other BJJ / MMA gyms in Brisbane, and cheap compared to the likes of F45 that charge $60.00+ per week.

Games for kids

I was asked about some ideas for kids games last week, there are so many and different versions of classic kids games that can be adapted and are only limited by your own brain. I want everyone to list two games and a brief description in the comments below. I have also included a link to some games below. Just remember to make sure the games are fun and safe.

Warm Up Drills Kids & Adults

Last week I asked for no more knee tag this year, so as a follow up from that below is a short video of some partner drills you can add to your warm ups. Something to think about is making your warm up’s suitable for what is being taught in that class. Like is there is a take down in the class tonight, then it would be a good idea to have some sort of break-falls in the warm up. You are not limited to what is in the video, but it is a good starting place or a reminder for you all. Like I said last week, about 5mins of line drills and about 5-mins of partner drill/s. Make sure you do the warm up with everyone, if you won’t do it why should they. Also make sure you do good clear demonstrations of what you want people to do and help people having trouble.

P.S. Please leave you name in the comments when you have read this post.

    Kids Games:

Sumo - The idea is two kids start in the middle of a grey square and they must push the other kid onto the black mats. Method, they use a kick bag on their chest, and start with the bags touching, they are not to ram each other, I do this to avoid head clashes.

Instructor Tackle - The idea is that it's a number of the kids or all of the kids v the coach. The kids have to get the coach down and pined on their back or tummy. You have to make sure that the kids don't get hurt and you don't squash them when you fall, this can be a very physical challenge for the coach but the kids always love it.

  5. Kids games
    - capture the flag
Kids split up into two teams, starting from two ends of the mat. The goal is to take the other teams flag (ball) back to their end.
    - dodge ball
Players on two teams throw balls and hit their opponents, while avoiding being hit themselves.
    No headshots for safety

  6. Kids games:

Tail tag - all the kids get one of the chopped up belts and place them behind their back tucked in with their belt. Then all the kids have to steal each other’s tails. The person with the most tails at the end is the winner

Lightsaber hockey - set up two cones as a goal on each side of the mats and give everyone a pool noodle. Split the kids up into two fair teams and the aim of the game is to hit a dodgeball through the goal to score. The rules are everyone has to be on their knees and you can only hit the ball with the pool noodle

    Kids games:

    - Bullrush but everyone starts in turtle and has to crawl on knees and elbows to the other side of the mat. 1-2 people are 'it' and they tag other players by flipping them on their back.

    - Everyone pairs up and start on opposite sides of the mat facing the wall, with a belt/ball in between. The coach calls out instructions like in simon-says. When the coach calls something out and doesn't say 'simon says' everyone has to run to the middle and grab the belt before their partner.
