Rounds – 20min:
Noodles or Pad Work
3 x 2min Rounds they will hold for each other. (Instructors need to teach them how to hold)
We use noodles instead of focus mitts and Thai pads, the reason for this is multi layered.
- Reduce the impact on the body saving their developing joints.
- Reduce equipment, no gloves or wraps needed to hit noodles.
- Noodles are thinner which increases striking accuracy.
- Noodles are softer than pads so trainers can give instant feedback to the kids, to improve their defence.
Sparring – 5min:
2 x 2min Rounds, General Touch, Kick, Clinch, Kick & Clinch, Hands Only Touch
Any sparring is light touch only. The kids should be matched to bring out their best, but also mix the kids around so it is fair for all kids. Avoid paring kids that may clash when possible, or change the rules to avoid them clashing. The objective is for the kids to practice what they have been learning in a competitive sparring session not to fight each other and create hostility.

- Different to video:
- Duane Ludwig uses a very different number system for striking combos, I use the name of the strike (i.e. Jab, Cross, Hook)
- In the system on the video the fighter enters the clinch using the last punch in the combo, I use the opposite hand after the last punch to enter the clinch (i.e. Jab, Cross, Hook, Clinch – which means the fighter throws a Jab, Cross, Hook, and enters the clinch using there right hand after they have thrown the left hook).
- Essential Detail: Throw the opposite knee to the first hand that enters the clinch
- i.e. Jab, Cross, Hook, Clinch – which means you are clinching with your right hand first, so you throw your left knee first.
- If you left knee is first then normally it will need to be a switch knee.
- Most Common Mistake: Not moving your feet when you reach for the clinch, you must step both feet forward as you enter the clinch.

- Difference: For me a “Cover” is when you block the punch with the back of the glove a “Catch” is when you block the punch with the front of the glove, similar to what Stephen does with the Uppercut in this video.
- Essential Detail: Make sure to understand which hand or leg to return the counter shot, based on how much you load your body when blocking.
- Most Common Mistake: “Over Covering” moving the hand blocking the punch too much, some ppl take the glove all the way to the back of their head, this opens up the rib cage for body shots, kicks & knees.
- Drill Orders: First choose to defend straight punches, hooks, or uppercuts. Start with the cover or catch (without the return) using one of the principles from the video, then move on to the counter based on that principle. If time permits you can then teach the other principles, and or defending other punches. You can also choose to either Cover or Catch the punch.
