Low Check & Counter / Take The Back From Mount
Warm Up – 5min
- Line Drills
- 10 Push Ups, Sit Ups, Squats
- Shadow Sparring
Striking Development Lesson – 10min:
- Basic Footwork: Circle & L-Step (Stephen Whittier)
- Low Check & Counter (Duane Ludwig)
- Different to video: Take a small step toward your opponent after the check
- Most Common Mistake: Not turning the foot out when checking
- Safety Tip: Keep it light and controlled
- Drill Orders: Start with just the kick & check drill then add the counter
BJJ Development Lesson – 10min:
Take The Back Mount
- Bulldozer / Modified Mount
- Indicator: Bully rolls to either side from the bottom of the mount.
- Essential Detail: Keeping the back knee and the back hand posted for base.
- Most Common Mistake: Too much weight on the front foot.
- Safety Tip: Be careful not to crush the child’s front foot if they forget to move it.
- Transfer Teaching Tip: Help position the child’s legs at first then leave it up to them
- Backpack / Back Control
- Essential Detail: Solid over-under / seat belt control.
- Most Common Mistake: Weak leg hooks.
- Safety Tip: Be careful not to allow your head to collide with the child’s.
- Transfer Teaching Tip: Shake side to side more aggressively as the child’s confidence grows.
- Remount Technique
- Indicator: Bully attempts to escape the back mount.
- Essential Detail: Effective hook transfer to full mount and constant closeness.
- Most Common Mistake: Waiting too long to reestablish the mount.
- Safety Tip: Allow the child’s leg to slide under your hips without crushing it.
- Transfer Teaching Tip: Use your hands to make the transfer to mount more challenging each time.
Drill Partner Combos – 5min:
- Partners exchange combos using gloves & shinnies
Sparring – 10min:
- 2 x 2min Rounds, Kick & Clinch
- 2 x 2min Rounds, Back Position Wins
