Overhand Punch & Elbow Escape (Side Control)

Warm Up – 5min

  • 2min Skipping
  • 10 Push Ups, Sit Ups, Squats
  • Shadow Sparring

Striking Development Lesson  – 10min:

  • Basic Footwork: Gallop Step (Stephen Whittier)
  • Punch – Overhand (Stephen Whittier)
    • Essential Detail: Do not throw your head too far out or hinge at the hoops too much
    • Important Detail: make sure to move both your feet, not just the front foot
    • Most Common Mistake: Not keeping good defence, it his very important to cover with the left hand
    • Drill Orders: Practice with gloves and use them like focus pads. Start with just the over hand punch, then add it to the end of a few combos to get them started.

BJJ Development Lesson  – 10min

  • Side Control Elbow Escape – Knee Drive Variation
    • Indicator: Bully attempts to transition to the full mount by driving their knee across your stomach.
    • Essential Detail: Keep your leg flat and elbow blocking their knee at all times.
    • Most Common Mistake: Failure to curl the body and escape at the right time.
    • Safety Tip: Don’t crush the child’s stomach with your knee.
    • Transfer Teaching Tip: Make the back leg heavier as their timing and confidence gets better.

Focus Pads – 15min:

  • 3 x 1.5min Rounds – Combos adding in the overhand punch

Sparring – 10min:

  • 1 x 2min Rounds, Hands Only
  • 1 x 2min Rounds, Kicks Only
  • 2 x 2min Rounds, BJJ Pass or Sweep
