Lesson 26 – Rear Takedown
Position:
Standing
Overview:
Generally speaking, you would not want to engage physically with the bully unless he/she attacks you first. But, if one day you find yourself in a situation where you see a bully physically attacking a smaller child, and you want to help the victim, you can use the Rear Takedown to take control of the bully.
Technical Slices:
Rear Takedown
- Indicator: Bully is attacking a smaller child and you wish to help.
- Essential Detail: Effective base and persistent pullback.
- Most Common Mistake: Failure to keep the heel block intact throughout the takedown.
- Safety Tip: Be sure to avoid sitting on your child as they pull back.
- Transfer Teaching Tip: Resist the pull back more and more as their confidence increases.
Bully Battle
- Practice the Rear Takedown in combination with all of the previously learned techniques at various intensity levels. Give special emphasis to the Standing Headlock Defense (Lesson 23).
Final Thoughts
- Whether you establish the rear clinch on a bully who is harassing a helpless child, or you simply end up there during the heat of battle, the technique is the same – block the heel and use all your bodyweight to off balance the bully and bring the fight to the ground.
