Lesson 24 – Punch Block Series (Stage 5)

Position:

Guard

Overview:

From Stage 4 it is important that you drop the bully back to Stage 1 as quickly as possible so that you are safest from punches and have the best control over their body. If, while in Stage 4, the bully is not leaning forward heavily enough to be dropped to Stage 1, it is best to push them away to Stage 5. In this lesson you will learn how to defend from Stage 5 as well as what to do if the bully tries to dive in for a knockout punch.

Technical Slices:

Stage 5

  • Indicator: Bully avoids leaning forward in Stage 4 of the Punch Block Series.
  • Essential Detail: Use front leg to push and pivot, keep other leg coiled and ready to block at all times.
  • Most Common Mistake: Blocking leg too extended making it too easy to grab.
  • Safety Tip: Use one of your hands on the ground to control the impact of your weight.
  • Transfer Teaching Tip: As the child’s legs get stronger dive with more and more weight

Bully Battle

  • Practice Stage 5 in combination with all of the previously learned techniques at various intensity levels. Give special emphasis to the Shrimp Escape (Lesson 21).

Final Thoughts

  • If the bully backs up far enough from Stage 5, do not hesitate to stand up in base. If the bully rushes in for a punch, use both feet to block their hips then drop them into Stage 1. If they throw your legs aside for easier access to your face, use the Shrimp Escape to put them back into the guard.
