Lesson 15 – Double Leg Takedown

Position:

Standing

Overview:

The advantage of establishing an upper body clinch is that once you take the bully down you end up in the mount position. If you think it might be difficult to establish the clinch, the Double Leg Takedown is a great alternative. In the Gracie Game course, you learned how to apply the basic Double Leg Takedown against an aggressive opponent, and now we will teach you how to apply it against a conservative opponent.

Technical Slices:

Conservative Opponent

  • Indicator: Bully advances towards you conservatively.
  • Essential Detail: Use a fake jab at their face to disguise your entry.
  • Most Common Mistake: Weak leg control and body drive.
  • Safety Tip: Be careful where you fall.
  • Transfer Teaching Tip: Make your base stronger and stronger each time.

      Bully Battle

      • Practice the Double Leg Takedown in combination with all of the previously learned techniques at various intensity levels. Give special emphasis to all the standing techniques in the curriculum.

      Final Thoughts

      • The advantage of the Double Leg Takedown is the surprise element of going for the opponent’s legs. The disadvantage is that you may end up inside your opponent’s open guard. If you don’t think you can effectively control the bully in the clinch, this takedown may be more effective than the upper body strategies. Perfect them both so that your instincts can choose the best option in the heat of battle.
