- Ashi-Garami Entry
Lesson (30min)
Ashi-Garami Sweep
- Start in ashi-garami
- Connect your laces behind uke’s far side hamstring, so that both legs are controlled
- Grip your own hamstrings on the near side
- Keep your shoulders on the mat and punch your hips upwards
- Turn your knees outwards to off-balance and sweep uke backwards
- If both legs are controlled, uke will eventually fall even if they are able to hop a few times
Straight Ankle Lock – Winning the Grip Fight
- Continue from ashi-garami (uke knocked down)
- Block uke’s attempts to reach your lapels
- Uke should be trying to close the distance and shoot their ankle through your grip
- Overwrap uke’s ankle with your arm
- Create distance with your legs and walk your grip up high on uke’s foot
- Your grip should feel like it’s about to slip off, if you cannot see uke’s ankle then your grip is likely too deep on the shin
Straight Ankle Lock – Finishing Mechanics
- Continue from straight ankle lock
- Use your second hand to reinforce your ankle grip, bringing your wrist as high as possible
- Bring your chest forward and your shoulders back to tighten the grip
- Tuck your elbow tightly to your body, so that your arm and shoulder touch the mat
- Bridge your hips forward while maintaining your grip to finish the submission
- Point your eyes in the direction of your bridge for maximum pressure
Straight Ankle Lock – Belly Down Finish
- Continue from straight ankle lock
- Uke peels your outside leg away and sits over it to relieve pressure
- Uke should be trying to close the distance and bring their knee forwards
- Use your inside leg to post on top of uke’s hip, maintaining distance
- Turn belly down with both knees on the ground
- Don’t slide your legs flat onto the mat, elevate your hips so that you have room to bridge
- Bridge your hips forward while maintaining your grip to finish the submission
