Striking Development Lesson  – 10min:

  • Basic Footwork: Mirror Drill (Stephen Whittier)
  • Lead, Rear & Switch Front Kick / Teep (Don Madge) & (Stephen Whittier )
    • Different from video: Always keep both hands up, protecting the head is better than the small amount of extra power you get from pumping a hand or both hands.
      • I teach adults both hands up, but it becomes a personal choice
      • For kids I think both hands up is the best way to go.
      • Some people teach to pump one or both hand out instead of down.
    • Essential Detail: Hit with the ball of the foot, toes pulled back.
    • Most Common Mistake: Not lifting the knee high enough
    • Drill Orders: Teach each the skill as a shadow drill, then use the wall, finish as a partner drill

BJJ Development Lesson  – 10min:

Straight Armlock Mount

  • Side Variation
    • Indicator: Bully turns sideways underneath you but does not roll to their knees.
    • Essential Detail: Effective transition to the modified mount.
    • Most Common Mistake: Committing to the armlock too soon.
    • Safety Tip: Protect your face so the child doesn’t kick your nose during the spin.
    • Transfer Teaching Tip: Make the arm extension process more challenging each time.
