Striking Development Lesson  – 10min:

    • Basic Footwork: Movement (Don Madge)
    • Cover & Return Straight Punches (Stephen Whittier)
      • Different from video:
        • Need to simplify, the video makes this too complex for Kids
        • Use same side return punches only
        • Use “Rhino Horns” rather than single gloves
      • Most Common Mistake: Throwing a punch from the wrong side (The shoulder is too far forward)
      • Partner Reminder: Don’t throw too hard
      • Safety Tip: Keep the gloves pressed into your head
      • Drill Orders: Start very slow as a partner drill then increase from there

    BJJ Development Lesson  – 10min:

    • Positional Control – Mount, if you don’t have solid control strategies you will get thrown off.
    • Spider Hands / Anchor & Base
      • Indicator: Bad guy tries to throw you off to either side.
      • Essential Detail: Solid neck-hug and centred body position.
      • Most Common Mistake: Wobbly arm on the base hand.
      • Safety Tip: Push gently at first to avoid hurting the child’s posted arm.
      • Teaching Tip: Make the neck-hug more challenging by pushing the child more intensely with each rep.
    • Spider Swim / High Swim
      • Indicator: Bad guy tries to push up on your chest to throw you off.
      • Essential Detail: Quick swim with one arm at a time.
      • Most Common Mistake: Failing to follow-up with a low wide base position.
      • Transfer Teaching Tip: Use your arms to make it harder to swim through each time the child succeeds.
    • Low Swim
      • Indicator: Bully attempts to wrap your posted arm and roll you out.
      • Essential Detail: Solid base hand with a stiff elbow.
      • Most Common Mistake: Weak elbow positioning during the swim.
      • Safety Tip: Do not chop the child’s arm too quickly.
      • Transfer Teaching Tip: Wrap the arm stronger and stronger each time to increase elbow stiffness.
