Lesson 46 – Ashi-Garami Guard Pass
Warm Up (5min)
Partner Drills
- Ashi-Garami Entry
Lesson (25min)
Holding Top Position vs Ashi-Garami
- Start in ashi-garami
- Shift your weight away from your lead foot (your head should be over uke’s hip)
- Widen your base, stepping your second leg away from uke
- Don’t ever let uke reach your second leg, as this almost always guarantees that they will be able to knock you down
- Turn your knee inwards, making it hard for uke to punch up and outwards with their hips
- As uke tries to force you backwards, hop on your second leg to recover your balance
Ashi-Garami Guard Pass
- Continue from ashi-garami holding position
- Bridge your hip at an angle and peel off uke’s foot away from your hip
- Pass off uke’s foot to your hand and apply a stiff-arm to keep it away
- Push uke’s inside knee downwards with your other hand
- Backstep over uke’s legs so that both of your legs are on the same side of their body
- Your final position should be “reverse knee-on-belly”
Positional Rounds
Reverse Knee-on-Belly – Pin / Re-Guard
- The top player should use an ashi-garami guard pass to get to reverse knee-on-belly. The bottom player should let them do this WITHOUT RESISTING.
- As soon as the top player has stepped past the legs, the round starts:
- The bottom player wins if they manage to re-guard for 10 seconds
- The top player wins if they manage to pin their partner for 10 seconds
- The top player may stay with knee-on-belly or go to side control, mount, or back control to score their pin
