Lesson (30min)
Tomoe-Nage – Grip and Off-Balance
- Start in De la Riva guard
- Take a straight lapel and tricep grip on uke’s gi
- On the side opposite your De la Riva hook, post your foot on uke’s hip
- Pull uke forwards so that their head moves above your head
- Ensure you are pulling your knees to your chest at the same time, so that you are not counteracting the pull of your upper body
Tomoe-Nage – Executing The Throw
- Continue from tomoe-nage off-balance
- Extend your foot on uke’s hip to throw them over your shoulder on the same side
- Practice hitting the correct sweep timing; extend your legs only at the point where uke’s head is above your head
- Roll backwards with uke to end up on top position
- It is possible to land in either mount or a side pin
Tomoe-Nage – Forward Shift
- Continue from De la Riva, with grips and legs set to attempt tomoe-nage
- Uke drops to a knee and brings their head back and away to stop you from pulling them forwards
- Shift your weight forwards and sit up
- Don’t undo your grips or your leg configuration
- Throw your bodyweight onto your back to off-balance uke with the help of momentum
- Perform tomoe-nage as before
Lateral Sweep
- Continue from De la Riva, with grips and legs set to attempt tomoe-nage
- Uke sinks their weight onto their heels to stop you from pulling them forwards
- Roll to the outside of your De la Riva hook and grip around uke’s ankle to hold their foot in place
- Use your foot on uke’s far hip to push yourself away, making it easier to get to the outside of your De la Riva hook
- Put your shoelaces against uke’s torso and push them over the blade of their trapped foot
- Bring your knees to your chest and push through your shins to knock uke down to the mat
- Get up to top position and control uke’s legs to keep them on the ground
