What is Kickboxing?
Kickboxing is a generic term for any stand-up Martial Arts that use punches and kicks in a system of fighting. However at Sassom Mixed Martial Arts we look mostly at the Dutch Style of Kickboxing. Over the years, the Dutch have refined their style of Kickboxing by incorporating Kyokushin karate, Western boxing, and Muay Thai.
The Dutch use punching combinations (sometimes 6-8 techniques) to create holes in their opponent’s defence and follow in for explosive finishes. The Dutch kickboxing style become popular in the 1990s and 2000s, when the Dutch produced 15 out of 19 Kickboxing World Grand Prix Champions. Due to the rule set of Kickboxing, the fights are often more action packed and some say more exiting to watch.

Why mix both Muay Thai and Kickboxing together?
At Sassom Mixed Martial we have found that teaching both Muay Thai and Kickboxing with a little Western Boxing mixed in our students become more all rounded practitioners. This allows our students to adapt to their opponent, giving our students more “questions” for their opponent to answer. The footwork and hands from boxing, the combinations, speed and distance management from kickboxing, and the power, knees and elbows from Muay Thai, these are only some of the skills that make our students stand out from the rest.
Kickboxing is a better base for MMA competition, however the elbows and knees from Muay Thai are devastating in MMA, so a blended approach is the smart choice for those interested in MMA, but also the blended approach works well in tradional Muay Thai bouts as well.
